Glossary: W

WAN
Abbreviation for “Wide Area Network”: Network that can be designed to circle the globe (but at least leaves the building), unlike the LAN network. WANs are interesting for companies and organizations that have subsidiaries or branches at several locations. Basically, networked systems such as the Internet, the international Fido network, and those that cross borders and networks are WANs since these also involve computers exchanging information across long distances. See also: Kerpenwerk – Specialist for independent and universal building cabling.

WAP (general)
Abbreviation for “Wireless Application Protocol". WAP is a protocol that defines the transmission and representation of special internet content on devices with limited display possibilities, such as mobile phones or handheld PDAs.

Watermark
A watermark is an image in the paper that is visible when held against the light. The main types are simple light-dark watermarks (Fourdrinier technology as used in business letter paper) and high-quality watermarks with various shades of grey (cylinder mould technology such as in the banknote portrait).

Watermark, barcode
The presentation of a barcode in the form of a watermark containing machine-readable features.

Watermark, complete surface
Contrary to registered position watermarks, this covers the full area of the paper.

Watermark, cylinder mold
Cylinder mold watermarks are based on an exclusive production technology that is only available to a small circle of suppliers. Interpol recommends the use of the cylinder mold watermark as a secure form of protection against the counterfeiting of currency and identification documents since, contrary to Fourdrinier watermarks, this watermark creates various shades of grey tones and creates a three-dimensional impression. Example: Architectural graphics in the watermarks on the euro banknotes or portraits on many international banknotes.

Watermark, electrotpye
See Watermark, highlight

Watermark, Fourdrinier
Contrary to cylinder mould watermark technology, Fourdrinier watermarks can only create watermarks with light-dark tones and are therefore easier to counterfeit. Fourdrinier technology is also used in conventional paper manufacturing and therefore anyone can have access to it (for example, the watermark on high quality business letter paper).

Watermark, highlight
Syn. electrotype watermark; is created during paper web formation and is used for special highlighting of important information. This type of watermark is very light (since it is very thin) and very clear (due to the sharp edges). Example: Information on the value of the banknote in the watermark on the euro banknotes.

Watermark, registered position
Watermarks with an exactly defined position from all sides of the paper, contrary to a watermark that covers the entire paper surface.

WBMP
Wireless bitmap – bitmap graphic format to add graphics to WML pages. WBMP graphics have 1 bit color depth and can therefore only differentiate between black and white.

WCDMA
Wideband Code Division Multiple Access. The third generation of technology for the wireless systems based on CDMA technology.

Web Client
The term web client refers to a software program which requests information from a web server and presents it to the user. One example of a web client is an internet browser.

Web Server
The term web server can mean one of two things:
1) a computer responsible for serving web pages, mostly HTML documents, via the HTTP protocol to clients, mostly web browsers;
2) a software program that is working as a daemon serving web documents. Connections to HTTP servers are made using web browsers.

White List
A list in a database that notes all chip cards that may be used in a specific application.

WIM
Abbreviation for “Wireless Identification Module (see WTLS)

Window size
Measurement used in message protocols that specifies how many commands may be sent without acknowledgment. If the window size = 1, the next command can only be sent once the first command has been acknowledged.

WML
Abbreviation for "Wireless Markup Language". A descriptive language defined in XML for the illustration of Internet /WAP contents on small mobile devices such as mobile phones or handheld PDAs.

WWW, W3
The World Wide Web is a part of the worldwide Internet and famous mainly for the possibility of linking any documents with hyperlinks and for the integration of multi-medial objects in documents.
