A gateway permits communication between computers that are integrated into different data networks or file services. For example, there are gateways between Compuserve or BTX/T-online and the Internet.

GEI
Gesellschaft für Elektronische Informationsverarbeitung mbH; proper company name: CAP debis GEI, subsidiary of Daimler-Benz InterServices and a partner of Cap Gemini Sogeti, for example, has developed interface specifications for the electronic purse planned by the banks in German; has created the security assessment for the network operators and most of the EFTPoS terminals for electronic cash as prescribed by the central credit working group (Zentralen Kreditausschuß or ZKA).

German Digital Signature Act
Section 3 of Germany's Law on the Regulation of the Framework Conditions for Information and Communication Services (Information and Communication Services Act, IuKDG) from June 13, 1997, is commonly referred to as the Digital Signature Act. The legislation covers the requirements for the use of digital signatures in Germany.


Giesecke, Hermann
Hermann Giesecke was just 21 years old, his partner Alphonse Devrient was 31 years old, when they founded their company Giesecke & Devrient on June 1, 1852 in Leipzig; within a short time they developed this into a leading company in the industry. Mainly with groundbreaking inventions in Guillochier and printing technology.


Global System for Mobile communications (GSM)
The most common smart card in the world is one we normally never see - the GSM card in mobile telephones. The GSM networks (D and E networks in Germany) grew out of a European standard for mobile telephones that, in the meantime, has become a worldwide standard. All GSM telephones consist of two physically separate units - the telephone (cell phone) as the communication unit and the participant card. This SIM card (SIM = subscriber identity module) is the core of the mobile telephone. It contains all the important information such as the worldwide unique user ID, data for the network operator, and the specific authentication algorithm. The card is equipped with a microprocessor to execute the cryptographic algorithms. The compact plug-in SIM card that is used in most cell phones was specially designed for mobile phones from G&D.
