Ferrite High-coercivity magnetic material.
Fibers Are made of plastic and are usually integrated invisibly in the banknote paper. Under UV light they fluoresce in different colors.
FID The file identifier is a two-byte feature of a file. MF, DF and EF all have an FID. The FID of an MF is always ‘3F00’.

FIPS The term Federal Information Processing Standard describes the standards published by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Firewall Technique in the form of hardware and/or software that controls data flow between a private network and an unprotected network (i.e. between LAN and Internet) or which protects an internal network from external attack from the Internet. The firewall does this by comparing the IP address of the computer from which a data packet has been received against a list of permitted senders and only allows their data to be received.
Firmware Command data used to control a hard disk or other device (scanner, graphics card, etc.) and stored on a chip (e.g. Flash ROM or EEPROM)/ This data can normally be modified by means of upgrades.

Fitness The quality of banknotes. See also: Recognition

Fitness detection Checking the banknotes for soiling, graffiti, paper quality, tears/holes, dog-ears, etc. There are 3 sorting categories:
- ATM fit = very good quality suitable for use in bank machines
- Fit = banknotes that are in good condition and can be returned to circulation
- Unfit = banknotes of poor quality that are to be destroyed

Flash memory Memory card consisting of non-volatile memory chips which is used in place of hard disks. Flash memory requires a power supply of a maximum of one coin cell or no power supply at all. It is used mainly in PCMCIA cards and PC cards.
Floor limit Amount above which a payment requires authorization. Payments within the floor limit are guaranteed to the merchant. The floor limit is set individually by the credit card companies according to sector and merchant.

Fourdrinier procedure This is a procedure to manufacture commercial paper as well as security paper with a low security standard. Contrary to cylinder mould technology, the Fourdrinier procedure can only create watermarks with light-dark tones.
