Future of the Banknote
|
Seemingly unaffected by the advance of cybermoney and internet banking, credit cards and traveller's cheques, the volume of banknotes in circulation is still growing world-wide. The reasons for this are clear:
|
- Use of cash involves no exchange of data - so people's spending habits remain their own affair.
- Cash payments incur no fees, unlike the use of debit and credit cards where charges have to be paid, whether directly or indirectly.
- It's easier to protect banknotes against loss than to protect "electronic" money against the attacks of sophisticated computer criminals.
- Paper currency is environmentally compatible. Made of cotton, a renewable resource, it has clear advantages over notes on a plastic substrate:
- Paper notes printed on mould-made paper can use all the proven and familiar security elements
- Design and feel of the paper are not changed.
|
Giesecke & Devrient has also developed a solution to soiling, one of the most common reasons for removing banknotes from circulation. G&D now offers TOPnote - Transparent Overlay Protection - an innovative technology for encapsulating paper and printing that extends the lifetime of banknotes in circulation.
